The Nuvem Biodiversity Management Committee (NBMC) has called upon students to stay alert about the need to preserve biodiversity of the village and prevent its degradation.
NBMC last week felicitated SSC toppers. Former NIO scientist Dr Antonio Mascarenhas, who was also a guest at the felicitation function, highlighted the importance of vegetation along coasts.
NBMC chairman Jose Roque Andrade congratulated the ten meritorious students and urged them to save natural resources for the future. “Be aware of the degradation of biodiversity in our beautiful Nuvem village as they are our future resource, and we will have to preserve the trees, birds, animals etc,” he said while urging students and villagers to be a part of the preserving and documenting of the biodiversity by reporting any flora especially medicinal plants and fauna.
He also informed that the NBMC had signed an MoU with TERI who will be the technical support group to assist NBMC, to prepare the People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) and requested the villagers and panchayat members to help TERI team along with NBMC to collaborate in preparing the PBR.
Ten students were felicitated with mementos and certificates for scoring high marks with three students each belonging to Mae Dos Pobres High School, Nuvem, Holy Rosary Convent High School, Nuvem, students attending other schools and 3 students who scored highest marks in science but residents of Nuvem in the SSC examination held by the Goa Secondary and Higher Secondary Board in March 2018 and one student from other secondary boards. The felicitation function was held in the Nuvem panchayat hall on July 21 at 4 pm.
Also present were Dr Sr Aradanha, principal of Carmel College, Nuvem, Advin Carvalho, secretary of NBMC and Elvita Costa and Indira Rodrigues, members of NBMC.
