Orixtt Porjecho Avaz (OPA) has condemned the summons issued by the Quepem Deputy Collector to some villagers and elected members from Naqueri Betul.
Addressing the media in Panjim, a group of NGOs warned the government against employing pressure tactic and vowed to continue the protest against the DefExpo despite the summons.
OPA spokesperson Freddy Fernandes said that besides villagers, two Zilla Panchayat members and one panch member have also been summoned to appear before the court on March 17 and 18 to explain why they should not enter into a bond of Rs 20,000 with one surety to keep the peace during the DefExpo.
“We are not going to respond to the summons. We had given our memorandum to the same deputy collector four month ago explaining why we are opposing the expo and till date he has not replied to us,” Fernandes said.
Naqueri Betul panch Marcus Simoes said, “It is a sorry state of affairs that elected members are being summoned for being with the people who elected them.” He said that over one lakh people are expected to visit the expo, but they are only two narrow roads leading to it.
In the absence of proper roads, he said, the government cannot handle emergencies. Delfie Barbosa, another panch from Naqueri Betul, slammed the BJP government for not providing proper power, water, education and health care facilities to the village.
He said that the panchayat is operating from the government school and on the other hand the government is spending crores of rupees on the DefExpo.
The movement against DefExpo has grown to include Rainbow Warriors, Goans For Dabolim Only, CSJP, United Goans Foundation, Curtorimkarancho Ekvott, Banaulim Civic and Consumer Forum, Colva Civic Forum, Navelim Consumer Forum, Seraulim Consumer Forum, Cavrem Adivasi, Areal Union, Cansaulim Villagers Action Forum, Keri Kil Mundkar, Cavelossim Forum, Village Groups of Goa, Nuvem Civic Forum, Carmona Civic Forum and Pilerne Citizen Forum.
