In a move that has further pushed the Sarpanch Lavita Dias in the minority, Xavier Fernandes from the opposition group was elected as deputy sarpanch of Carmona panchayat defeating Prisco Rodrigues who was backed by the sarpanch.

The move comes against the backdrop of the last panchayat meeting, which saw a clear division among the seven- member panchayat group on the Raheja issue with sarpanch Lavita Dias, Prisco and panch member Carlos Jorge on one side and Xavier, Divina Rodrigues, Sandra Fernandes and former deputy sarpanch Orlando Da Silva on the other.

Responding to queries from mediapersons, Xavier said there is no immediate plan to dislodge the sarpanch when pointed out that she is in the minority.

The deputy sarpanch added that for the last three years there has been no opposition within the panchayat. It is only after the Raheja issue they went on the other side following public pressure.

He said that they would work collectively for the betterment and interest of the village. He further stated that they (panchas) are for the village and will always keep the welfare of the village as their first priority.

He pointed out that it was all seven panchas that had agreed to grant construction licence to the Raheja project.

It is to be noted that the Sarpanch and the two panchas Prisco and Carlos have backed the people’s movement against Raheja and had unsuccessfully tried to move a resolution to issue a show cause notice against Rahejas at the last panchayat meeting.

Monday’s development comes on the heel of the ten-day deadline given to the government and the panchayat to revoke the construction licence given to Rahejas by the Carmona Village Social Forum.

The forum members had joined the protests in Panjim in support of Fr Bismarque Dias. Forum president Socorro Miranda criticised the State government in view of the violent police action.

Miranda was critical of the Congress party for failing to make any statement on the Raheja issue.
