A passenger bus fell on its side on the Curtorim-Guirdolim border early Thursday morning. Fortunately, though no passengers were travelling in the bus and the driver escaped with minor injuries. The accident, however, has brought to the fore the bad condition of the road which has been the scene of many an accident in the past.
The accident triggered outrage amongst the local populace on both sides of the Curtorim-Guirdolim border, with people demanding to know the reason for the delay in developing the road to motorable condition.
Curtorim deputy Sarpanch J Santano Rodrigues cried foul over the dilly dallying by the PWD authorities to repair the road. “We had last year staged a dharna at the spot to highlight the dangers posed to motorists on the road. The PWD has not commenced work on the road on the lame excuse that they have received a lone bid for the tender. This is totally unacceptable,” Santan said.
Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, who rushed to the spot, threatened to take to the streets to get the road repaired. “We will be forced to come onto the streets if the PWD further delays in taking up the road work. A lone bidder is not an excuse to delay the execution of the work. This government had in the past executed works even without tenders,” A visibly agitated Reginaldo told the media, saying the elected representatives are forced to face the brunt of the villagers due to the lethargy of the PWD department.
PWD officials are believed to have later made their presence felt at the site and have promised to take up the work.
