Residents of Paliem, Pernem, at the gram sabha held on Sunday, took the local panchayat to task over the erratic water supply that has been plaguing the village since summer.
The villagers, who gathered in large numbers, accused the panchayat of “absolute failure” to regulate water supply even during the rainy season, when water shortage cannot be an excuse.
Sarpanch Babani Arolkar said that the panchayat approached the public works department (PWD) executive engineer’s office at Pernem thrice, and PWD officials also conducted a survey in the village.
But, that did not stop the villagers from getting into a heated argument with the panchayat members as there has been absolutely no improvement in the water supply, they said.
The PWD has come under severe criticism due to its failure to resolve the water shortage problem faced by residents of Paliem for over six months. The villagers of Paliem were also forced to face a water shortage during the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
“Poor water supply is a perennial problem. The panchayat and PWD have not yet taken any effective steps to solve the problem. Often their staff is engaged in diverting the water,” a resident said.
Residents demanded for an explanation for the water shortage, especially since the village has two water storage tanks and a PWD well which provides regular water supply, while water is also supplied from the Chandel water treatment plant.
The sarpanch and the panchayat body were unable to answer the barrage of questions raised by the villagers.
