The Chinchinim panchayat is likely to take a final call on the panchayat ghar-cum-market project, fate of which was hanging in balance for the last seven years, at its forthcoming meeting.
Nod for the project was given in 2011. However, the previous MLA Benjamin Silva instead proposed panchayat ghar-cum-sports complex at the site while shifting the market complex opposite the CRC ground which also faced large-scale opposition.
Villagers are venting their anger over the failure of the elected representatives to resolve the project issue.
A panch member, requesting anonymity, informed that the panchayat body has already approved the original panchayat ghar-cum-market project, however, the final decision will be taken at the forthcoming meeting.
Velim MLA Filipe Nery Rodrigues, confirming the development, said that the panchayat has decided to retain the original project and the onus is on the panchayat to place the proposal before the government.
Replying to a question on the delay, Rodrigues said that the panchayat was working towards consensus, however, there was discord among the stakeholders which resulted in the delay.
Meanwhile, Chinchinim villagers have expressed displeasure over delay in the panchayat ghar-cum-market complex work. They felt that the politicians should keep their differences aside and resolve the long-pending issue.
They said that there is a need for a market at Chinchinim, and added that it will help cater to the needs of the people of not only Chinchinim but also neighbouring villages.
They pointed out that in the absence of a proper market, the vendors have encroached on footpaths leaving no space for pedestrians to move who are forced to walk on the road causing traffic problem. They also said that fish vendors occupying the roadside create total chaos. The locals also claimed that the panchayat too has failed on its part to clear the encroachments and questioned if footpaths are to be used by vendors then where should the pedestrians walk.
They demanded with the panchayat to clear the encroachments and make way for the people to use the footpath.
