Around 100 locals including women from Poira village in the Mayem constituency marched to the Bicholim PWD office to protest ‘failure’ on the part of the PWD to provide regular supply of water, and took the officials there to task over the issue.
The agitating villagers received support from the Congress leaders, who were on visit to Bicholim constituency.
The villagers are not receiving regular supply of drinking water for the last six months. The villagers had brought the fact to the notice of the PWD officials on many occasions, but there were no satisfactory replies on their part.
The villagers on Tuesday first paid a visit to water tank site to find out the exact cause of water shortage. They later marched to the PWD office. Ashma Ghatwal, Bharati Shirgaonkar, Sanjana Ghatwal, Kimaya Pandhare, Sukhada Sawant, Urmila Raut, and Netra Ghatwal were among the women who participated in the agitation.
The Congress leaders including all India Congress Committee secretary and in-charge of Goa desk Chella Kumar, Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, GPCC president Girish Chodankar, Amarnath Panjikar, Vijay Bhike, Jana Bhandari, Urmila Naik, Anand Naik, Deelip Gawas, Prashant Chanekar and Manohar Shirodkar, who were on their tour of Bicholim taluka to meet the people, came to know about the hardships being faced by the Poira villagers due to water shortage and subsequently joined the agitation.
Kavlekar promised the villagers that he would treat this issue seriously.
