The Salcete Panchayat Forum on Wednesday called on the Director and discussed a host of problems plaguing the Panchayat bodies, including orders issued by Collector and other authorities to the Panchayats on issues unrelated to Panchayat matters.

A delegation of Forum led by Convenor Xavier Fernandes drew attention of the Panchayat Director Narayan Sawant the orders and memos issued by the district Collector to the BDO’s, which are turn addressed to the Panchayat bodies for action. 

After the meeting, Xavier told the media that the Panchayat Director has promised to look into the issue. “We have no problems if the directions come from the Panchayat director. But, we have raised our serious reservations to Collector’s memos addressed to the BDOs and the Panchayats,” Xavier said.

He pointed out that the delegation also took up the matter pertaining to a memo issued by the deputy director of Panchayats, South dispensing the role of ward member in the issuance of income certificate. “The Panchayat Director told us in clear terms that his office has not issued any such circular or memo and has assured to look into the issue,” he said.

The Forum Convenor further said that the Panchayat Director gave them a patient hearing on their request to recruit casual workers to take up civic works in the Panchayat areas. 

On the question of the golden jubilee fund utilization, the delegation impressed upon the Panchayat Director to get the deadline extended further so as to facilitate the Panchayat bodies to take up works under the scheme. “The Panchayat Director has assured that the government is already seized of the matter and is thinking of extending the time frame for implementation of the scheme,” he added.
