The Raia gram sabha on Sunday strongly objected to the move by government to construct bridge from Shiroda to Rachol over River Zuari alleging the same shall cause major destruction of fields, houses and environment.
A resolution was taken demanding that the tender called by Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation (GIDC) be cancelled and the project to construct the bridge be scraped.
The meeting adopted a resolution that the government amend Goa Panchayat (Gram Sabha meetings) Rules 1996 and The Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994 empowering gram sabha members to ask questions to panchayat body at gram sabha. The issue arose as sarpanch and activist Xavier Fernandes disallowed gram sabha questions raised by members at the Sunday gram sabha meeting.
Among various proposals taken up by the Raia gram sabha included the proposal to send welcome letter to new voters on the Voters Day, to hold police public met, to demand for Primary Health Centre with a bedded hospital for Raia, Loutulim, Rachol and Nuvem etc.
A resolution was also adopted to have a well equipped panchayat library for the benefit of locals with gram sabha members suggesting the sarpanch to take over the library started by former MP Eduardo Faleiro.
