Raia locals, on Thursday, demanded with the electricity department to repair the non-functional streetlights along the Arlem-Tembi stretch of the Margao-Ponda highway at the earliest to prevent further accidents on it.

The motorists face a great difficulty in covering the potholed road stretch in the dark.

“The streetlights at the Raia slope, where incidentally big potholes have been developed after the road restoration works of the JICA failed, are not functioning for the last two months. Locals fear to cross the road in the dark,” stated a local NGO member, A Fernandes.

Fernandes alleged that the electricity department has not repaired the streetlights despite several complaints were made about the problem.

Sarpanch of Raia Isidor Rodrigues said that the people did complain to him about the non-functional streetlights and explained to him as to how they face the difficulties in the absence of the streetlights.

“The panchayat will write to the electricity department to repair the streetlights at the earliest,” Rodrigues assured.

Interestingly, the residents staying in the downhill area keep their verandah lights on for easing the difficulty faced by the road users at that stretch.

Electricity engineer Peter Fernandes admitted that there is a technical problem due to the underground power cables, and added that it will be rectified soon.

“Due to the heavy downpour, we could not attend to the problem. The problem will be resolved now as the rains have lessened,” he maintained.
