Agitated residents of Manora in Raia village on Thursday called for immediate demolition of illegal structures in the locality without delay, saying the structures have become home for migrants.
An inspection carried out by a Raia Panchayat team headed by Sarpanch Xavier Fernandes in the presence of residents unearthed illegal structures in the Manora locality. The occupants of the structures could neither produce construction licences nor technical clearances granted by Town and Country Planning Department.
Local residents led by Anthony Fernandes made a fervent plea to the panchayat to raze down the illegal structures erected by the migrants. “If you visit the locality in the night, you will find that these illegal structures are the home for around 150 migrants. We don’t want migrants in our locality”, he demanded, while asserting that locals will be held responsible if the migrants are involved in any criminal activities directed against the locals.
Village Sarpanch Xavier Fernandes said the structures inspected today are all illegal in nature. “They have been erected without the mandatory permissions from TCP”, Xavier said, adding that such activity has robbed the panchayat and the exchequer of revenue.
Replying to a question, the sarpanch said the panchayat has viewed the matter seriously, adding that it would be placed before the monthly meeting to initiate action against the structures.
This is the second time that inspection has unravelled construction of illegal houses by migrants in the locality.
