Raia locals including rickshaw and taxi operators rushed to the office of the Raia comunidade on Wednesday to protest the ‘illegal’ sopo collections and parking fees introduced by the Raia comunidade authorities.
They met the comunidade clerk and questioned him whether the authorities are entitled to collect such parking fees and sopo collections without any approval from the administrator of the South Goa Communidade.
Tension was witnessed when the attorney and the president of the Raia Communidade— Jesus Dias and Bosco Pereira respectively entered the office and asked the clerk as to who called them inside the office without permission. This angered the locals who had come in large numbers to question the authorities.
Both the attorney and the president walked out of the office threatening to call police to maintain order.
According to Custodia Fernandes, “The attorney and president were charging us ` 20 by issuing a receipt without the name of the comunidade and the contractor’s details. We raised objections to it. The matter was brought to the notice of the administrator of the South Goa comunidade. We demand that if at all the authorities have to charge parking fees, it can be done through proper procedure.”
However the attorney of the Raia comunidade said that some of the locals ply their private vehicles for commercial use and park the vehicles in comunidade areas. But when asked whether necessary permissions was obtained from the authorities, the attorney said he has applied for the same and hoped to receive the permission at the earliest.
Police reached the site when the matter was diffused.
