Agitated residents of Raia on Monday stopped trucks transporting mud from the Sonsodo waste dumping site on grounds that the mud was transported beyond the municipal jurisdiction and to demand explanation on the status of the waste treatment at Sonsodo.
The scene will now shift to the District Collectorate on Tuesday where District Collector N D Agrawal has called for a meeting with the residents and municipal authorities.
The residents blocked the trucks transporting mud as they wanted the municipal authorities to visit the spot and explain them the status of the garbage treatment plant at Sonsodo. Besides, they wondered how mud from the municipal jurisdiction could be transported beyond the civic limits.
Activist Raju Iyer said residents of Raia and Curtorim have been facing the menace of flies, rodents and contamination of ground water on account of the Sonsodo waste disposal problem. “We wanted the municipal officials to explain to the villagers their plan of action to rid Sonsodo of the waste problem. We had no intention to block the mud transportation, but our attempt was aimed at drawing attention of the residents to the garbage nuisance,” he said.
Though municipal officials could not make it for the meeting with the residents, District Collector has invited a delegation of the residents for discussions on Tuesday morning. Pending the discussions, the residents have told the authorities to stop mud loading operations at the site.
