The pathetic condition of the Arlem-Raia killer road dominated the gram sabha of Raia on Sunday, with agitated members adopting a resolution to hold a rasta rako on December 5, if the PWD authorities fail to repair the road with hot mix from Raicho Ambo-Raia to Raia church.

Gram sabha members expressed their annoyance that sarpanch Isidorio Rodrigues failed to keep the promise that he would get the road repaired soon after taking office in January last.

Villager Manuel Barboza raised the issue of the poor condition of the stretch of road demanding to know what action has been initiated by the sarpanch to get it repaired.Villagers demanded that sarpanch write to the Vigilance department demanding inquiry on repairs carried out of the said road by PWD in past alleging sub-standard work.

The resolution received unanimous support from the gram sabha members, who promised to come in large number in support of their demand.

They also demanded that the panchayat make an announcement in the village informing the villagers of the resolution. The meeting that began at 10.45 am ended around 3 pm. Rosario Fernandes raised  the issue of the project at Arlem that is affecting 22 ST farmers as water/sewerage from the site is left to flow into the paddy fields.

The sarpanch was grilled for having renewed the licence for the project with villagers demanding its revocation.

Sarpanch pacified the aggrieved villagers and the farmers in particular, who threatened to resort to a hunger strike along with their families, by saying that no occupancy certificate would be issued to the builder unless he complies with all the conditions laid down in the construction licence.

A resolution was later adopted where the sarpanch along with farmers would inspect the site.

Former sarpanch Xavier Fernandes moved a resolution that the proposed Shiroda to Rachol bridge be realigned from Shiroda to old Borim bridge to join the highway. Further Xavier also moved a resolution that former CM Monohar Parrikar, who is now Defence Minister at the Centre, use his  office to acquire land from the Indian Navy for further expansion at Dabolim airport.
