The Raia gram sabha on Sunday have resolved to take up the resolution for the bifurcation of the village panchayat only after eliciting public opinion and after spreading awareness on the proposal amongst villagers.
The panchayat has received a proposal from residents of Manoar and Pariebhat to form a separate panchayat after deleting some wards from Raia panchayat.
Sarpanch Xavier Fernandes informed the gram sabha that residents of Manora and Pariebhat had proposed a resolution to have separate panchayat represented by the five members of Raia panchayat as they feared that the area represented by them would be taken over by the Margao Municipal Council. The sarpanch also informed the gram sabha members that locals feared that government would merge the area into the Margao Municipal Council — a move which was earlier taken but had to be stalled on account of political pressure.
With five of the panchayat members representing the area demanding separate panchayat, the sarpanch claimed had favoured the demand of the applicants however asking that resolution be taken at the gram sabha. Many residents from the area demanding separate panchayat aired their opinion with Gunu Pango stating that locals would be the sufferers if the area was covered under municipal council. Local panch Rumaldo Gonsalves informed that the request of locals was discussed at the panchayat body and that all the panchas representing the area had supported the move. He pleaded with gram sabha members to resolve the issue keeping in mind the interest of the locals as the move to get the area in municipal council would not be beneficial for the ST community and locals residing in the area. Other who spoke included Vincy Quadros, Francisco Colaco, John Quadros and Manuel Barboza,
The sarpanch said an important issue like the formation of a separate panchayat from the existing panchayat should be discussed threadbare before a special gram sabha.
