The Raia village panchayat will conduct a three-day trial run for door-to-door waste collection by collecting dry waste starting from January 17 with the garbage management committee seeking support of the villagers to make the village garbage-free.
Chairperson of the garbage management committee Edwin Vaz said that on January 17, collection will be done in wards 1, 2, 3, 4, and 11 while on January 18, dry waste will be collected from wards 7, 8, and 9 and in wards 5, 6, and 10, the collection will be done on January 19. He further said that the contractor will be accompanied by the panchas of the respective wards during the dry waste collection.
Vaz said that the trial run will give a clear picture of waste collection system that needs to be adopted in a bigger panchayat like Raia. He said, “This trial run will also be more of awareness on waste collection. Initially we will be collecting dry waste including paper, cardboard items, plastic items, e-waste, glasses, thermocol, rubber, clothes and leather items etc.”
Vaz said that initially the contractor will collect non-segregated waste during door-to-door drive and will segregate but later due awareness will be created to impress upon people to segregate waste at source.
Stating that a series of meetings were held by the garbage management committee with the panchayat members and secretary before reaching the decision, Vaz appealed to the people of Raia to support the panchayat in keeping the village free from garbage.
