The villagers of Raia have demanded police action against former sarpanch Isidorio Rodrigues for allegedly misappropriating panchayat money and for breach of trust.

According to the locals, when they asked Rodrigues to come clean on the misappropriation case at the last gram sabha, he had dared them to approach the police. Accepting his challenge, the people filed a complaint against Rodrigues with the police.

The complainant Francisco Colaco had submitted various documents and facts obtained under RTI and other sources to Margao police station on March 22.

The police have begun an inquiry into the matter and have even recorded a statement from the former panchayat secretary, but the case is still at the preliminary stage. People suspect that the police are deliberately going slowly in the matter.

The documents submitted to the police are related to the Durand camp organised at the football ground owned by the panchayat between October 15 and November 15, 2014.

The documents show that the ground was booked for Rs 1,20,000. In August 2015, the organisers of the tournament informed the panchayat secretary Rs 1,20,000 was paid to the panchayat, however, they were issued receipts only for Rs 90,000.

Colaco also provided proof of Rodrigues accepting Rs 30,000 by cash from the organisers. Colaco contents that Rodrigues received Rs 30,000 from the organisers but did not deposit the same in the panchayat account.

Providing more documents, the complainant alleged that the panchayat had incurred an expenditure of Rs 1,32,215 for the maintenance of the ground during the Durand camp without panchayat resolution.
