Joining the chorus of voices against the proposed Rachol-Shiroda bridge, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has vowed to back the agitation led by locals from Raia and Rachol, and criticized chief minister Manohar Parrikar for going ahead with the project.
“The government is keeping the people from my constituency in the dark. The panchayats of Raia and Rachol have not received any details about the plans and the locals are worried about the subsequent road alignment and widening,” said Lourenco. He added that his office had not received any proposal and questioned why Parrikar is ‘bulldozing ‘ the project on the locals, even when there is widespread opposition from the locals.
Both the panchayats have decided to hold a public meeting at Raia on June 4 , a day before the government opens the tender for the bridge. A Raia panchayat member pointed out that residents of both the villages had passed gram sabha resolutions against the bridge.
“Once we get the plans, we have to assess if there will be damage to any heritage structures in these villages like the Arch at the entrance of Rachol,” Lourenco added. He stated that there was also a discrepancy in the regional plan which showed the bridge only on the Shiroda side of River Zuari.
He pointed out that the villagers fear that the resultant increase in traffic would pose a threat to the safety of the locals, besides causing damage to the environment.
