Agitated Carmona residents, armed with a petition signed by over 208 locals, confronted the sarpanch and asked her to reject the mobile tower proposals of Reliance Jio in George Vaddo and Indus Towers in Fondo Vaddo due to radiation hazards.

The locals alleged that an illegal resolution in favour of Reliance had been penned down at the last sabha, and that the person who had allegedly seconded it claimed that his name had been used without his consent.

They also alleged that the location of both towers was kept a secret from the public in the gram sabha agenda. They have demanded that this resolution be scrapped and informed that the person concerned will lodge a complaint with the BDO against the secretary for listing him as a seconder for the resolution.

It may be recalled that the Carmona gram sabha had unanimously passed a resolution not to allow mobile towers near residential houses and in private property due to the risks of radiation. Meanwhile, Sarpanch Sandra Fernandes assured the villagers that NOCs for mobile towers will not be granted any cost.

Given the panchayat’s actions in the Raheja issue, the villagers demanded a written assurance from the sarpanch that proposals for both towers will be rejected, to which she did not oblige.Villagers vowed to protest against the towers and resolved to forcibly stop all installation works in their village.

They also resolved to continue their signature campaign and corner meetings to raise awareness about the effects of radiation, notwithstanding the propaganda regarding safety of the towers by TRAI.
