The proposed airport at Mopa once again came under stiff opposition at the gram sabhas across Salcete on Sunday.
Villager after village tabled unanimous resolutions opposing the proposed airport at Mopa while demanding that the government retain Dabolim as Goa’s only international airport.
The airport issue figured at the tourist village of Cavelossim – the hub of five starred resorts – when villagers in one voice opposed the new airport at Mopa.
The villagers have also decided to hold a rally in the village on November 9 with the participation of people and all organisations fighting to retain Dabolim as the sole international airport.
The rally will start from the Cavelossim church to Leela Beach Hotel in support of Dabolim airport. The airport issue also figured at the gram sabha of Rachol Village Panchayat on Sunday.
Villagers attending the gram sabha unanimously opposed the Mopa airport saying the new airport would spell doom for the Goan economy.
At the Curtorim gram sabha, members adopted an unanimous resolution demanding scrapping of the Mopa airport.
A resolution read by Abhijit Prabhudesdai said that the airport would displace hundreds of poor families from Mopa and destroy the tourism in the state.
The Carmona gram sabha came out strongly against the Request for Qualification tender floated by the government. Members demanded that the government drop the Mopa airport saying two airports are not feasible in a small state like Goa.
A resolution was also adopted by the gram sabha to write to the local MLA Caitu Silva to make known to the people his stand on the airport issue. The issue had its echo at the gram sabha of Dramapur-Sirlim Village Panchayat.
A member Wilson Viegas raised the issue at the Sunday gram sabha meeting, but was told by Sarpanch Agostinho D’Costa that a resolution adopted by the panchayat body in the past was communicated to the chief minister’s office.
