Salcete Sarpanchas were on Tuesday up in arms over the very functioning of the taluka BDO office and the wage prescribed for implementing pre-monsoon works in the villages.
They have demanded that the government either pay the workers the market wage or execute the pre-monsoon works through the PWD. The sarpanchas also sounded critical over the very functioning of the Salcete BDO office, bitterly complaining to the South Goa Deputy Panchayat Director on the non-functioning BDO office.
At a meeting called by the South Goa Panchayat Deputy Director on Tuesday, the sarpanchas expressed their reservations on taking up the pre-monsoon works with the meagre wage.
Rachol Sarpanch and spokesman of Salcete Sarpanchs Forum, Joseph Vaz and Curtorim Deputy Sarpanch J Santan Rodrigues and others complained that the Salcete BDO office has not even prepared the estimates for the proposals submitted by the Panchayat bodies over the last four months. ‘When the sarpanchas had inquired with the BDO over the work estimates, he attributed the situation to the election code of conduct and the non-cooperation by the engineers attached to his office. If the engineers are not listening to the BDO, they should be either transferred or the Panchayats should be permitted to engage private engineers to prepare the work estimates,” Joseph Vaz later told the media.
Vaz and other sarpanchas sought to know from the Deputy Panchayat Director the fate of the proposal to accord special financial package for the weaker panchayat bodies. ‘The new wage of Rs 350 is not acceptable when workers are demanding a market wage of Rs 500 per day. Moreover, a worker cannot cover 75 houses a day to collect plastic waste or carry out other work in a day”, he added.
Curtorim Deputy Sarpanch J Santano Rodrigues expressed his unhappiness about the way the Panchayat authorities went about in holding the meeting.
“It’s indeed sad that the Salcete BDO office has been sitting over the files over the last few months. Why should the Panchayats suffer if there’s no coordination between the BDO and the engineering section,” Rodrigues wondered.
