Deputy director of panchayats (South Goa) Pandarinath Naik on Tuesday asked the sarpanchas of Salcete taluka to forward their grievances to the government even as the sarpanchas have been asked to expedite the process to carry out the pre-monsoon works.
A meeting was held to discuss pre-monsoon works, disaster management plan and other issues. The sarpanchas were asked at the meeting to send proposals for carrying out pre-monsoon works and tree cutting at the earliest so that estimates and technical sanctions can be carried out.
The sarpanchas, who attended the meeting, once again stressed on the appointment of fulltime panchayat secretaries.
The matter of devolution of powers resurfaced at the meeting, even as the sarpanchas lashed out at the directorate of panchayats for delaying to act upon gram sabha resolutions.
The sarpanchas complained about non-availability of staff to prepare estimates and other works.
One of the sarpanchas pointed out that he has to bear the brunt of the villagers over development works although several proposals have been forwarded to the department.
The sarpanchas turned down a proposal of the directorate of panchayat on employing daily wage workers to carry out door-to-door garbage collection as they pointed out that the minimum requirement of ‘75 houses per labourer’ would not be feasible in densely populated villages.
The sarpanchas rued that poor panchayats were not receiving sufficient funds, even as they were assured that the government was in the process of appointing fulltime panchayat secretaries.
Earlier in the day, the meeting began on a sour note as the sarpanchas objected to the poor arrangements for the meeting.
The directorate of panchayat was accused of taking the Salcete sarpanchas for granted.
