Raising opposition to the setting up of a micro brewery in a house at Sangolda, villagers have handed over a memorandum to the Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar requesting him to intervene into the matter and revoke the provisional licence allegedly issued for micro brewery by the Sangolda panchayat.

However, the panchayat claimed that it has not issued any licence for micro brewery in a house. It may be recalled that villages had created a ruckus over the issue at the recently-held gram sabha.

When contacted, the panchayat secretary said that the panchayat had not issued any provisional NOC to the owner to start a micro brewery but a letter by the Excise department dated August 17 had sought the panchayat’s say whether NOC can be given for micro brewery to M/s Goa Brewcrafts Pvt Ltd and it had replied that it has no objection to it.

It may be recalled that the premises owner was issued a provisional NOC by the panchayat to start a restaurant in 2011 by then sarpanch Nameshwari Kandokar in house no 79/1 when the villagers objected and stopped the restaurant. The owner then started furniture business.

Salgaonkar assured the villagers, the chapel committee and the parish priest about revoking the provisional licence issued to the micro brewery. He told media persons that he will instruct the panchayat to revoke the provisional licence in its monthly meeting scheduled on November 15.

Sarpanch Premanand Kochrekar said that only no objection was given to the excise department after it sought panchayat’s say adding, “Provisional NOC is not issued if people object. The panchayat will stay with the villagers and revoke the licence.”
