Sarpanchas of panchayats from Sanguem taluka have demanded that the nominal honorarium that is being paid to them and the panchayat members at present should be hiked to at least Rs 25,000.
This demand was made during a press conference, held in Sanguem on Wednesday, attended by Bhati sarpanch Udai Naik, Netravali sarpanch Rajani Gaonkar, Vadem-Curdi sarpanch Sanjog Pai and deputy sarpanch Kushta Gaonkar, Rivona sarpanch Surya Naik, Uguem sarpanch Sanjai Parwar and member Marcus Pereira.
Udai Naik said that the MLAs and ministers have unanimously got their honorarium increased during the just-concluded Assembly session, while their demand for the same has fallen on deaf ears.
“We had expected that at least opposition MLAs would raise our demand, but in vain. We fail to understand why ex-MLAs are being paid pension? Our honorarium should be increased at least to Rs 25,000 and we should also be entitled for pension,” he said.
Rivona sarpanch Surya Naik said that the panchayat members work at grassroots level and a lot of expenditure is incurred while solving problems of the villagers. “If our demand is not considered by the government, then we will have to think otherwise in the Assembly election,” he said.
Vadem-Curdi sarpanch Pai said that the financial condition of the panchayat is very weak. “We appeal to all the panchayats in the state to come together and submit a memorandum to the government demanding increase in honorarium as has been done for ministers and MLAs.”
There are in all 7 panchayats in the taluka. The sarpanchas of Sanvordem and Kalay panchayats could not attend the press conference.
