The Raia gram sabha on Sunday witnessed a heated discussion about a ‘false’ report that had appeared in a section of the media.
Raia sarpanch Isidorio Rodrigues, told TOI, “The last gram sabha meeting had been adjourned after a discussion on the budget and audit report, and no proposals had been discussed. Yet, the newspaper report had claimed, by quoting a villager Anthony Fernandes, that the panchayat had sought hefty bribes to overlook the illegalities undertaken by a hospitality college constructed at Manora, Raia.”
“Seeking that the permission issued to this college be revoked, Fernandes has now procured documents such as the town and country planning (TCP) completion order, plan, etc, from the panchayat under the RTI. But, a joint inspection was to be conducted on May 14 along with the TCP, block development officer and health authorities, but the TCP and BDO remained absent. Hence, it was postponed, ” Rodrigues explained.
“The panchayat has sought a clarification from the newspaper that has falsely accused me of taking bribes from the institute’s management. We have insisted for proof, else demanded that an apology be issued by the newspaper. I was elected as sarpanch in August 2014 and the occupancy certificate was issued in June 2014. The other issue discussed was that of taking a month’s rent from those leasing out their premises on temporary basis to the labour community as it is difficult to assess them,” stated the sarpanch.
