A delegation of the Salcete Block Panchayats Forum (SBPF) will be meeting the director of panchayats, Panaji on October 9 to seek clarification over the memorandums being issued to the panchayats following orders from the South Goa Collector.
A series of memorandums issued by the South Goa block development officer (BDO) following directives from the South Goa Collector, have irked the sarpanchas, who want to know if the BDO, who is under the director of panchayats, can take directives from the Collector and issue memorandums to the sarpanchas.
The sarpanchas had pointed out that the Collector cannot issue directives to the sarpanchas and any direction should be routed through the directorate of panchayats as the sarpanchas are not the revenue staff of the Collector.
Meanwhile, process of unifying the sarpanchas of various talukas is gaining momentum with Quepem block of sarpanchas deciding to form a unified body on the lines of the SBPF.
A sarpanch requesting anonymity informed that the process of setting up Quepem block has come close to becoming a reality as all the sarpanchas are very positive in coming together under one umbrella body and taking up issues faced by them collectively.
He said that the sarpanchas will be meeting shortly to form the ad-hoc committee and taking the movement forward.
Speaking further, he said that the major issue at hand for the sarpanchas is devolution of powers, which is a long-pending demand.
