Offering much respite to the overburdened Salcete panchayats that do not have permanent secretaries, the Salcete Block Development Office (BDO) has assigned a gram sevak each to seven of them.
It maybe recalled that the panchayat secretaries had to handle two panchayats and would visit each only three times a week. Additionally, for the last several years, the seven panchayats functioned with part-time secretaries that have been assigned gram sevaks.
The panchayats with gram sevaks as secretaries include Carmolim, Sarzora, Cavelossim, Aquem-Baixo, Betalbatim, Colva and Macazana.
Earlier, the Salcete block, with 30 panchayats, had only 23 panchayat secretaries, and hence, seven secretaries were given additional charges.
Salcete BDO Uday Prabhudesai added that the gram sevaks can fill the void and help alleviate the problems faced by the people.”The panchayat secretary charge is given to the gram sevaks by the government.
In Salcete seven gram sevaks have already taken charge. With these gram sevaks, we now have panchayat secretaries at all 30 panchayats in Salcete,” said Prabhudesai.
Meanwhile, the sarpanches who were in favour of permanent panchayat secretaries recalled that the government had experimented with gram sevaks as panchayat secretaries, only for the government to revert that decision. It is to be noted that the Goa Panchayat Raj Act says that every panchayat must have a full-time panchayat secretary.
