Shawn Martins was elected unopposed as sarpanch of Calangute, election for which was held on Friday with three panch members remaining absent at the panchayat office at Calangute.
The post of the sarpanch was left vacant after the erstwhile sarpanch Anthony Menezes tendered his resignation. Fatusing Shetgaonkar, junior engineer was the presiding officer from the BDO office.
Only one application was received for the post of sarpanch. Anthony Menezes proposed the name of Shawn Martins while Sudesh Mayenkar seconded it. The new sarpanch Shawn Martins said that the previous sarpanch Anthony Menezes has laid a solid foundation and being new in the panchayat, he has learnt a lot from him.
Martins appealed to the ex panchayat members to lend their support to develop Calangute. He also appealed to the educated youth to come up with ideas to develop Calangute.
Pointing out that electricity and water woes are two main issues and the MLA is working to resolve them, Martins said that the panch members are also doing a follow up on the issue. He said that an electricity cables from Porvorim to Saligao and a water tank are coming up at Umtawaddo adding, “Regularising of 1,500 illegal houses which have been shown on the ODP plan is under process.”
Martins said that he will monitor the situation on drugs and prostitution with the tourism department and take action. He also said that he will protect the hills and fields in the village.
