Special Gram Sabhas were convened in Dharbandora taluka on Sunday to appoint Forest Rights Committees under the Scheduled Tribes and other traditional Forest Dwellers Act (recognition of Forest Rights Act 2006 and Rules 2007).
The act will help people residing in forest land or are using land for farming purposes to claim ownership.
“There are 16 villages in Dharbandora taluka, of which nine villages have appointed committees. The committee will be headed by the chairperson, who will be selected from the 15 members by the members themselves,” said Dharbandora taluka Mamlatdar Satish Prabhu.
Prabhu, who is the observer for appointing committees, informed people that the occupants (scheduled tribes and other traditional forest dwellers) have to submit their claim to these committees within three months.
“People also can file claims under community right for crematorium or playgrounds. The committees will then cross examine and will forward the claims, if genuine, to the Deputy Collector and from the deputy collector’s office, it will go to the District headquarters for finalization,” informed Prabhu.
“Try and nominate senior people on the committees which help in identifying genuine applicants. The committee members will be imparted training for this purpose,” added Prabhu.
