A delegation of the members of Salcete Sarpanchas Block Forum (SSBF) met DySP Mohan Naik, on Saturday evening, and suggested to set up a special panchayat police cell in view of the increasing incidents of abuse, threat and assault on elected representatives and their family members.
They highlighted few such incidents that have taken place in Salcete and demanded immediate action on the part of the police.
The forum members met the Dy SP and other police officers and demanded action against those guilty of assaulting the husband of Sao Jose de Areal panch member, and abusing and threatening Benaulim sarpanch.
Led by convenor Joseph Vaz, the forum members — Raia sarpanch, Xavier Fernandes; Benaulim sarpanch, Royala Fernandes; Sarzora sarpanch, Jacinto Fernandes; Paroda sarpanch, Deepak Karangate and Sao Jose de Areal sarpanch, Julio Monteiro raised concern over the growing instances of assault and abusing of elected representatives.
PI of Colva police station Uttam Raut Dessai and PI of Maina Curtorim police station Gurudas Kadam were present during the meeting attended by Salcate sarpanchas.
Memorandum was handed over to DySP Mohan Naik demanding security to the elected representatives.
The DYSP was apprised of the recent assault on the husband of a panch member, and the mental torture Benaulim sarpanch and her staff have to face due to the abuses hurled daily by a villager at the village panchayat office.
The DySP assured the sarpanchas to initiate action and directed the Maina Curtorim PI and Colva PI to act promptly. He also assured to provide security during the gram sabhas.
Sarpanchas suggested to set up independent panchayat police cell which will help in the smooth functioning of the village panchayats.
Meanwhile, the DySP informed that the Colva police had arrested one person from Cana-Benaulim under 151 of CrPC as a preventive measure for threatening sarpanch and in the second case at Sao Jose de Areal action has been initiated.
Naik said that the person, who was arrested under Section 151 of the CrPC, has come back to Benaulim and has started abusing again and that they have sent a report to sub divisional magistrate about the further development.
“We will take appropriate steps and action if someone takes the law in hand,” he added.
