RDA Minister and Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha has given the authorities until Thursday to start removing the grounded pontoon and tugboat at Arossim beach, failing which she has threatened to camp at the beach along with the villagers of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim, until the work begins.

On Wednesday, Saldanha convened a meeting at her office in Cansaulim to discuss the grounded pontoon issue.

The meeting was attended by officials of the Captain of Ports, Mormugao Port Trust, residents and members of the fishing community.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Saldanha said, “At the meeting, I was informed that the pontoon stranded on Arossim beach does not come under the jurisdiction of the Captain of Port or MPT, but under the jurisdiction of the South Collector under Disaster Management.

It was also informed that a tug has already been mobilised from Mumbai by Arihant Ship Breakers to remove the pontoon. The same is expected to reach by Thursday afternoon.”
