Chaos prevailed at Sao Jose de Areal gram sabha after the villagers tore the maps given by railway officials of the proposed double tracking of railway line alleging that the maps were illegal and not certified by any authority.
The villagers also demanded action against illegal plots being developed in the village and also a crackdown on scrapyards.
The villagers reacted angrily after the panchayat produced a plan of the railway officials citing that the work being carried out was within the railway property which was already acquired.
They rejected the plan claiming that it was not signed by any authority and said that the gram sabha has the status of an Assembly and only legal documents can be produced.
The angry villagers questioned the sarpanch as to how the plan had no stamp or signature and alleged that this was an attempt to cheat the people and create a tension.
The villagers also demanded with the MLA Filipe Nery Rodrigues, who was present for the meeting, to raise the issue of new land acquisition for the railway work during the upcoming Assembly session.
The villagers also raised questions over the status of the scrapyards to which the sarpanch Perris D’Costa informed that there are 34 scrapyards in the village including some new which have emerged. The villagers demanded immediate action against them and also sought that a letter be written to the collector calling for necessary action.
Further, the residents demanded that the panchayat should write to the TCP over illegal development of plots and also said that the panchayat should file a FIR immediately and send a copy to the TCP minister to take necessary action against the developer.
The villagers also passed a resolution demanding installation of statue of Dr Jack de Sequeira in the Assembly and sought that the MLA should take up the matter.
Later addressing the villagers, the MLA said he would support them in their fight against various issues concerning the village including the double tracking of the railway line.
