In a bid to make Velim free of garbage, the village panchayat has launched ‘My home my village’ campaign with an aim of getting villagers involved in the garbage collection. The panchayat also launched the weekly door-to-door garbage collection.
Unlike most other villages which are dependent on migrant work force for garbage collection, Velim panchayat has found the garbage collection an opportunity not only to make the village clean and address the garbage issue but also to generate employment for the villagers.
Speaking to this daily, the sarpanch Savio D’Silva said the panchayat has prepared a systematic door-to-door garbage collection system covering all the nine wards. He said days have been designated for each ward so that people can be prepared with their dry garbage and hand it over to the village panchayat employees.
He said prior to this campaign the village panchayat has also carried out a massive door-to-door awareness programme in association with the solid waste management corporation on garbage segregation at source.
He said the panchayat has also made available phone numbers of all the panchayat members so that the villagers can be given any assistance with regard to garbage collection, adding that it is also the responsibility of the villagers to ensure that their village is kept clean.
