Considering the rampant rise in people renting out their premises within the panchayat jurisdiction, the Veling-Priol-Kunkolim villagers have resolved to charge a one month’s rent as ‘panchayat fees’ from the landlords against each tenant.
A resolution was passed with a majority of villagers supporting the resolution.
During the gram sabha the villagers raised concern over anti-social activities due to a rise in the number of migrants residing in the village.
“Without police verification and lease agreement, some landlords have rented their premises to migrant labourers. It has become an issue due to their involvement in anti-social activities” said villagers.
The villagers further said that women are not safe as they are being harassed and stalked by migrants.
Villagers demanded strict action against landlords for renting out their premises illegally.
Claiming that there is no provision in the Panchayat Raj Act to stop people from renting out their premises, the panchayat informed the gram sabha that they don’t have any data regarding landlords or people renting out their premises in the village.
After discussing the issue for more than an hour, the villagers decided to charge landlords a one month rent as ‘Panchayat fees’ against each tenant living in their premises. The landlords were also directed to submit the lease agreement copy to the panchayat.
Locals say that it will help generate revenue for the panchayat. Later a resolution was taken with majority members supporting the issue.
According to locals due to the Kundaim industrial estate many migrant workers from Kundaim based industries are staying in rented premises in the village.
The gram sabha was chaired by sarpanch Laxmikant Khedekar and was monitored by secretary Dinkar Kosambe.
All panch members of the village were present for the gram sabha which was attended by over hundred villagers.
