Villagers of Seraulim and Benaulim on Monday rejected the proposed changes in the western bypass proposed by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. The villagers now want the Western bypass to be built on stilts to prevent flooding.
PWD officials visited the panchayats of Benaulim and Seraulim and presented the proposed changes including box culverts as suggested by the Chief Minister when he had visited the on-going works of the bypass.
The villagers have rejected the proposal and demanded that the entire highway passing through their respective villages be built on stilts to prevent flooding. The villagers pointed out that the box culverts will not help due to the low lying catchment areas of River Sal.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao said that the meeting was a single point agenda to discuss the proposed changes to the western bypass. He said since the people have rejected the proposal and have demanded that the same be built on stilts, he will also demand the same from the government.
The villagers further stated that they are not opposed to development, however it should not be at the cost of creating problems to the people living in the area.
PWD officials however said that they will convey the wishes of the people to the government adding that the change in the proposal will further escalate the cost of the western bypass if the entire stretch is to be built on stilts.
