With elections in mind, Salcete panchayats are trying to fast track the pre-monsoon works while not waiting for BDO and PWD to prepare estimates and provide labour.
Annually panchayats complain that pre-monsoon work could not be taken on time; hence, this time, several panchayats have decided to go ahead with the works by curtailing the expenditure to Rs 10,000 per ward.
Dramapur sarpanch Bernado Rebello informed that “this year we have not received any communication from the BDO over the pre-monsoon works, however, all the panch members have agreed to start work in their respective wards and a resolution has also been passed to this effect.”
He said efforts will be made to tackle the problem of waterlogging and the drains will be cleaned up before the monsoon. “The problem of waterlogging occurs especially in Zamcotto as there is no proper drainage network due to encroachments and while the file is pending before the BDO we are trying to ensure that waterlogging is reduced,” he said.
Another sarpanch, requesting anonymity, said that “ours is a large panchayat area and, hence, we used to send the proposal to the BDO for estimates well in advance but every year the story was same; the files got delayed and the work would start only after monsoon. This time round with the panchayat term ending and the ensuing elections there may be no time for the new body to carry out the work, so we are going ahead with the work.”
Colva sarpanch Meninio Fernandes said, “The panchayat body has already passed a resolution to commence the pre-monsoon works. We will not wait till the end to carry out the works.”
While Chinchinim sarpanch Santos Rebello informed that the work to clean the drains is expected to start in the days to come as the panch members have agreed to get the work done on priority. “Our term is nearing completion and we do not want to keep anything pending especially pre-monsoon works,” stated Rebello.
