He complained that the oil-tanker drivers parked their vehicles along the National Highway 17 B and near the entrance of Zuari Indian Oil-tanking Limited (ZIOL), due to which the road had become a death trap. He added that accidents took place regularly, but the authorities turn a blind eye.
“The only option is to come out on the streets and show that Mormugao residents are frustrated and want action so that innocents don’t lose their lives at this spot,” said Rodrigues.
Sancoale residents complained that traffic in the area was severely affected due to the haphazard movement and parking of the tankers. Despite several requests to the authorities, including the Mormugao RTO, the situation hasn’t improved.
“We are complaining about the oil tanker menace only because the road is a slope. Any other vehicle that passes through the area takes utmost precautions.
However, there is no control for oil tankers, and thus, people fall victims to them,” said former Sancoale deputy sarpanch Girish Pillai, who was also the victim of an accident on the same road.
As per the Vasco traffic cell, the road is a sinking road. Vehicles heading to Verna from Vasco automatically pick up speed and often lose control.
Thus, traffic police have declared the road as a ‘no parking zone’ for tankers. A traffic official said, “We started issuing fines to tanker drivers who violated rules.
Besides that, we also requested the ZIOL management to ensure that the tankers are not allowed to park on the road.”
