Around 100 Zuarinagar residents, on Sunday, staged an hour-long protest against the Sancoale panchayat’s decision to grant NOCs for mobile/WiFi towers in residential areas.
They have also unanimously resolved to intensify their agitation by blocking the highway leading to Dabolim airport if the panchayat does not revoke the permissions within 10 days.
“Looking at the way a large number of people came forward to protest, we have decided not to leave this issue until the NOCs for the mobile towers are revoked by the panchayat.
We are ready to come onto the streets with the people, and if our demands are not met, we will also block the main road leading to Vasco city and Dabolim airport,” said Edward Fernandes, president of the Vidyanagar Residents Welfare Association (VRWA).
VRWA member B S Ingalhalli stated, “We fought together to ensure that our area was declared a ‘liquor-free zone’, and today we don’t allow wine shops in our area. Similarly, we have decided to make our area a ‘mobile tower-free zone’.
“Sancoale panch Sharan Meti informed the aggrieved residents that he had raised his objection to the mobile towers with the other panchas at a panchayat meeting, but as he is in the opposition, his voice was not heard and the NOCs were granted.”I informed the ruling group that people from MES College are not in favour of mobile towers, but still the panchayat issued its NOC.
We need to keep vigil as people install mobile towers at night,” said Meti.A signature campaign was also held, and over 400 people signed a petition against the installation of mobile towers in Vidyanagar.
The VRWA has decided to submit a memorandum along with the signatures to Panchayat Minister Rajendra Arlekar, Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha and the Director of Panchayats seeking their intervention in the issue.
